Design, Demo, Done: Select Surfaces Makes Remodeling Easy

Select Surfaces helps customers design or reimagine their kitchens and bathrooms with custom quartz countertops, backsplashes, sinks, and faucets. 

Their modern Roseville showroom allows clients to see, touch, and experience a wide range of options, including Minnesota-made Cambria quartz surfaces. They are one of just four certified Cambria installers in Minnesota.

“Countertops are very personal for people – it’s a big, long-term decision,” said Tanya Otten, one of the owners. “We’ve found that having thoughtfully designed showrooms really helps support our customers through the selection process. And because our team members have design backgrounds, they can truly guide customers every step of the way.”

Select Surfaces is a family-owned business founded in Roseville in 1996. It remains headquartered there today, with additional showrooms in Woodbury and Plymouth. They serve both residential and commercial needs and their clients include homeowners, contractors, builders, and designers. 

A large part of their sales includes work for residential and commercial designers, remodelers, builders, realtors, and contractors. They’ve installed countertops in the food court in Rosedale Mall.

The Select Surfaces team also guides customers through the entire process – from measuring and demolition to installation.

“What makes us unique is that we have a general contractor’s license, so we can handle a full countertop remodel,” Otten said. “We can remove old countertops, disconnect and reconnect plumbing, move appliances if needed, add overhang support, and demo and install backsplashes. We make the process simple and enjoyable.”

They also carefully curate the high-quality products they offer, with a focus on maintenance-free materials and strong warranties. Over the years, they’ve learned that durability and timeless style matter most to their customers. 

Select Surfaces is owned by four Otten siblings – Jeremy, Jerome, Dan, and Tanya – along with partner Mark Kroll. Several of their children are now part of the team as well.

The family of 13 originally grew up in St. Paul. Their father, who immigrated from Brazil, was a jack-of-all-trades and serial entrepreneur – a mindset he passed on to his children. Many of the siblings went on to become business owners in the construction and design industry. Jeremy Otten started his own tile-setting business at just 21. 

“Jeremy developed a real passion for countertops and eventually shifted his business in that direction,” Otten said. Their strategic partnership with Cambria, which began in 2003, “really helped put Select Surfaces on the map,” added Otten, who oversees marketing.

Their first showroom was located at the corner of Lexington and Larpenteur. In 2015, they moved to their current location at 2800 Fairview Avenue, which houses their showroom, warehouse, and business office. Today, they have about 40 full- time employees and place a strong emphasis on training, development, and promoting from within. All of their project managers began as installation technicians and worked their way up. 

Select Surfaces’ location near other home interior showrooms, including Muska Lighting and The Tile Shop, helps create a bit of a Roseville design district.

“Roseville is really central, which makes it easy for clients across the metro to get here,” Otten said. “There are also so many great businesses and resources nearby. People can come to this area and accomplish a lot in one trip – it’s a great place to be.” 

Otten said she has built strong professional and personal connections within the Roseville community. She even met her husband – owner of Roseville-based Charles Cabinets – at the City of Roseville Business Exchange.

All of these factors contribute to a seamless experience for clients.
