News, Success Stories, Choose Roseville

Finding quality home healthcare for aging loved ones is a stressful but necessary experience for those in need and their family members. Matching quality services with a family-oriented approach is natural for Amare Solomon, who moved to the country from Ethiopia when he was 12.

“In Ethiopia, we emphasize caring for our family members at home,” he said. “Institutions can be tough on people and I wanted to bring a family-caring attitude to my business here.”

After more than a decade in a hospital lab setting, Solomon started Safeway Home HealthCare in 2019 as a family-owned and operated home care service provider based in Roseville. Its qualified, caring providers service the Greater Twin Cities area. They are committed to helping their clients lead an independent, dignified and safe life from the comfort of their own homes through transparency, respect and a welcoming environment. The home care provider offers personal care assistance, essential support such as homemaker or respite care, individualized home support and employment support. While providing the best services to its clients, Safeway also fosters an inclusive and cooperative working environment for its employees and offers educational and developmental training to staff.

Perfect fit in Roseville

Solomon was a Medical Technologist at the University of Minnesota Medical Center from 2006 until 2021, when he decided to take a chance on starting his own business. He had always planned to start his own healthcare business but didn’t know how to begin. Solomon resided in Roseville and started the business in his basement until he found a building for sale just a few blocks from his home.

“Noah Her, of Ramsey County Open-to-Business, was an invaluable advisor for me in understanding how to proceed with purchasing the building,” Solomon said. “Also, I did not understand how to market my business at first and the City of Roseville helped me make my business known.”

Solomon’s first client came in December 2019, just a few months before the world turned upside down with the COVID-19 pandemic. The timing worked out perfectly for Solomon, however, as he was able to focus on ensuring excellent service to those first few clients.

“To be successful in business, you have to know yourself and love what you do,” he said. “For the first year, I made sure to build the foundation of my business properly and be able to hire quality employees to deliver the services we know we can provide well.”

Today, he has 11 employees, including Personal Care Assistants (PCA), Individualized Home Support (IHS) workers and nurses who care for about ten clients in Roseville and many surrounding cities. His clients primarily come through the many Ramsey and Hennepin County case management agencies helping families find solutions to their health care needs.

Time to grow

Solomon believes he is ready to grow after building his business foundation for approximately two years. He is struggling with staff shortages like so many small businesses, but he is confident in the future of Safeway.

“I know we will grow and be even more successful because there is truly a great need for our services in the community.”
